The Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Temple Hospital remains one of the most robust and comprehensive academic programs in the nation. We continue to provide exceptional clinical training, next-generation research opportunities, and high-quality educational experiences.
This fall, with the help of the Stephen E. Codella MD Fellowship Fund, we achieved a milestone by sending our largest cohort of fellows to the GOLD International COPD Conference. This premier global event convenes leading experts in COPD to discuss emerging trends, innovative therapeutic strategies, and to review the release of the annual GOLD COPD guidelines. With its extensive lectures, interactive learning labs, and opportunities for direct engagement with thought leaders, the conference stands as an unparalleled educational experience for our fellows.
The lung transplant track continues its remarkable growth, with nearly half of each fellowship class electing to pursue this specialized pathway. Under the guidance of Dr. Fatima Anjum, the curriculum—including didactic sessions, lecture series, and case-based conferences—has expanded significantly to address the complexities of transplant patient management. Beyond clinical excellence, fellows are producing an increasing volume of impactful research in lung transplantation and presenting their research findings at national and international meetings.
Fellows have also demonstrated initiative by creating a peer-led critical care lecture series, held weekly. This is a fellow-led and directed initiative that includes journal clubs, ventilator management discussions, and a dynamic critical care “Jeopardy!”-style competition, fostering both collaboration and mastery of essential knowledge.
Simulation lab training continues to advance under the guidance of Dr. Lijo Illipparambil and Dr. Aamir Ajmeri. What started out as a one-time GI bleed simulation has expanded to include urgent airway bleed scenarios with bedside bronchoscopy management, as well as expanded bronchoscopy simulation incorporating EBUS training—ensuring fellows achieve proficiency prior to performing procedures in clinical settings.
We are proud to announce that the 2025 Stephen Codella, MD Scholar Award was presented to Dr. Zehra Dhanani. This award enabled Dr. Dhanani to attend two major conferences to showcase her extensive research in lung transplantation. Dr. Dhanani has since joined the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a transplant physician, exemplifying the success and impact of our fellowship alumni.
