Musculoskeletal Pain

What Is Musculoskeletal Pain?

The musculoskeletal system consists of bones, muscles and connective tissues, including tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Together, these components support the weight of the body, protect internal organs and provide the means of movement. When any part of this complex system does not function as it should, pain can result.

Musculoskeletal pain can occur for a vast array of causes, including:

  • Diseases such as osteoporosis, lupus erythematosus or muscular dystrophy
  • Infections of the bone, skin, muscle or other soft tissues
  • Inflammation due to injury or disorders such as bursitis, arthritis or gout
  • Injuries such as strains, sprains, dislocations, fractures or repetitive overuse
  • Malformations of the bones or joints, such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine)

Symptoms

Symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders may include:

  • Fatigue — Discomfort leads to a lack of restful sleep
  • Inflammation — Swelling, warmth, tenderness or redness may appear in the affected area.
  • Noises — Affected joints may make popping or grinding sounds.
  • Pain — Pain may be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-lasting), confined to one area or more widespread, and can range from mild to debilitating.
  • Reduced range of motion — It may be difficult to lift, rotate or move the body as usual, especially the limbs or lower back.
  • Stiffness — Muscles and joints may feel achy, tight or sore.
  • Weakness — Muscles may feel overworked, twitchy or burning.

Treatment Options

Depending on the specific diagnosis, treatment options may include:

  • Rest, ice, compression and/or heat — In the initial phase after an injury, rest promotes healing. Applying ice packs and/or heat help decrease acute pain from inflammation.
  • Physical therapy — Physical therapy may include exercises, devices, counseling or lifestyle modifications to relieve symptoms, maximize functional ability and promote personal well-being.
  • Medications — Over-the-counter and prescription medications help alleviate pain, soothe muscle spasms and relieve stiffness.
  • Injections — Therapeutic injections such as corticosteroids ease pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Surgery — Surgery may be needed to repair injuries or defects and help restore prior level of function.
