Fractures

What Are Fractures?

Fractures are common injuries to bones, most often as a result of sudden impact, trauma or accident. A fracture occurs when the bone breaks or cracks. Stress fractures are related to overuse and are seen prior to a full fracture occurring to the bone. FOOSH injuries — when you fall on an outstretched hand — can also cause fractures.

Fractures require immediate medical attention.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a fracture include:

  • Pain

  • Visible changes to the bone

  • Swelling, bruising and tenderness

  • Numbness and tingling

  • Difficulty moving the injured area

Treatment Options

Treatment for fractures can vary depending on how severe your injury is and may include:

  • Cast or splint to stabilize the injury and allow the bones to heal

  • Surgery to correct the fracture and promote healing
