What Are Fractures?
Fractures are common injuries to bones, most often as a result of sudden impact, trauma or accident. A fracture occurs when the bone breaks or cracks. Stress fractures are related to overuse and are seen prior to a full fracture occurring to the bone. FOOSH injuries — when you fall on an outstretched hand — can also cause fractures.
Fractures require immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of a fracture include:
Visible changes to the bone
Swelling, bruising and tenderness
Numbness and tingling
Difficulty moving the injured area
Treatment for fractures can vary depending on how severe your injury is and may include:
Cast or splint to stabilize the injury and allow the bones to heal
Surgery to correct the fracture and promote healing
