Bariatric surgery helped Joe W. lose weight and keep it off

Joe’s weight loss journey hit a roadblock when a health scare changed everything. With the help of bariatric surgery, he found a new path to sustainable wellness.

Joe W. has always been active at work, and he stays busy with his wife and three sons. But excess weight affected his energy levels and well-being.

In his early 40s, Joe was determined to make a change — and he did. With the help of a nutritionist and weight-loss medications, Joe lost 120 pounds.

“I was in great shape,” he says. “But then I had a hernia with complications. I gained all the weight back due to work and stress.”

That’s what led Joe to Temple — and the help he needed to make a lasting change.

Comprehensive care

Joe didn’t come to Temple for bariatric surgery. Instead, he made an appointment with Rohit Soans, MD, to discuss hernia repair.

“He said he couldn’t do the surgery unless I lost a substantial amount of weight,” Joe says.

But Dr. Soans didn’t send Joe off to tackle this task on his own. The team at the Temple Bariatric Program partnered with Joe to manage his weight.

Testing showed that he was a good candidate for bariatric surgery. Joe began to work with a Temple nutritionist to establish healthy habits before the procedure.

He lost about 80 pounds prior to having gastric sleeve surgery in April 2023.

“I was down to 300 after surgery, but I wasn’t eating the right way,” Joe says. “I gained 15 pounds back.”

Joe realized something had to change. And words from Dr. Soans rang in his head.

“He told me, ‘Someone your size, your body is telling you that unless you 100% change how you live, you’ll put this weight back on.’”

Joe took this guidance to heart, and he took charge.

“I changed my lifestyle, changed my way of eating and focused on fitness,” he says. “Now, I’m down 170 pounds. My highest was 399. Now I’m at 230.”

Lasting habits bring new joys

Guidance from Dr. Soans, nutritionists and the care team at the Temple Bariatric Program has helped Joe make big changes and stick with them.

I’m in the best shape of my life. I hadn’t run in 25 years — now I’m jogging. Last year, I bought a road bike, and I biked 600 miles down the seashore. I’d bike 20 to 30 miles at a time whenever I was down on weekends. I just started strength training.

Joe

Dr. Soans even introduced Joe to rucking.

“You put weights in your backpack, and then you walk,” Joe says. “It felt amazing that I could do it.”

Joe is also taking on activities that he’d previously avoided, burning calories and saving money by doing his own yardwork.

And he’s enjoying quiet but meaningful changes. His pant size has gone from 42 to 36. And Joe no longer needs a CPAP machine for sleep apnea.

Joe is thrilled with how he’s feeling now. But he’s quick to point out: “Surgery isn’t a magic pill. But bariatric surgery got me on the right path, focused on health and fitness and knowing what to do.”

Now, Joe concentrates on consistency. He’s active every day and eats a high-protein, low-carb, low-sugar diet — with occasional indulgences.

“You’re talking about a guy who used to eat a large pizza, or a big burger. Now, if we’re on the boardwalk, I’ll get a slice of pizza, but just one,” Joe says. “Back in the day, I would cheat on my diet. But this isn’t a diet. It’s a lifestyle.”

Joe has checkups at the Temple Bariatric Program every six months, and he anticipates having hernia surgery early next year.

Now, he’s feeling empowered and enjoys inspiring the people around him.

“I love life, I love my three sons, I love my wife, and I’m doing it number one for myself, and number two for my kids,” Joe says. “I used to live to eat. Now I eat to live.”

‘It’s going to change your life for the better’

For people considering bariatric surgery, Joe has words of encouragement.

“Listen to your thinking about the surgery. You’re halfway there. Don’t let something in the back of your head scare you. Soans is one of the top doctors in Philly, and he’s great,” he says. “If you put the hard work in, you can do anything you want. It’s going to change your life for the better.”
