Temple University Health System’s preparations for and treatment of patients amidst the coronavirus pandemic continue to be part of the media’s COVID-19 coverage.
- The Philadelphia Inquirer interviewed Gerard J. Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Temple Lung Center, and Hernan Alvarado, Director of Respiratory Therapy at Temple University Health System, for an article about ventilators and COVID-19.
- Nanzhou Guo, a nurse practitioner at the Temple Lung Center, reflected on what the transition to caring for COVID-19 patients has been like in an article for WHYY. The article also featured commentary from Dr. Criner, who detailed Temple’s preparations for the coronavirus, including its collaboration with colleagues in Wuhan, China, and the research efforts underway to help treat the sickest patients.
- Temple’s preparation for the coronavirus pandemic was featured in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, which published a paper about the subject. Junad M. Chowdhury, MD, a pulmonary and critical care fellow in the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery, is the paper’s first and corresponding author. Fellows Maulin Patel, MD; Matthew Zheng, MD; and Osheen Abramian, MD; as well as Dr. Criner, contributed. - Patricia Gannon, RN, a radiology-special procedures nurse, and her daughter Siobhan Knox, RN, a medical-surgical nurse, shared what their experience has been like working alongside one another at Temple University Hospital during the coronavirus pandemic in a segment with 6ABC.
- Tony S. Reed, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of Temple University Hospital, spoke with 6ABC about the parameters that he feels must be met before areas affected by the coronavirus pandemic can consider reopening.
- Dr. Criner discussed blood clots and COVID-19 for a segment with NBC10.
- Philadelphia Magazine highlighted Temple University Hospital treating the first patient in the United States in the BREATHE clinical trial in its roundup of COVID-19 research in the Philadelphia area. The BREATHE clinical trial will evaluate the impact of IV treatment with gimsilumab on mortality for patients with COVID-19 and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Dr. Criner is the principal investigator at TUH.
- Daniel Edmundowicz, MS, MD, FACP, FACC, Chief of Cardiology at Temple University Hospital, Professor and Vice Chair of Program Development in the Department of Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), and Medical Director of the Temple Heart & Vascular Institute, and Kraftin Schreyer, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at LKSOM, Director of Clinical Operations at the Temple University Hospital-Episcopal Campus, and Director of the Emergency Medicine Administrative Fellowship, were interviewed by the Philadelphia Inquirer for an article about the declining number of heart attack and stroke victims presenting to hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.
- Kathleen Reeves, MD, Senior Associate Dean of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Director of the Center for Urban Bioethics; and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, described some of the Center’s coronavirus outreach efforts in minority communities for a Politico article on the topic. The Center’s initiatives have included partnering with community organizations and printing 10,000 flyers about social distancing in Spanish and English for distribution at supermarkets and corner stores.
- Nicolle K. Strand, JD, Assistant Director for Research at the Center for Urban Bioethics and Assistant Professor of Bioethics at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, joined the “Michael Smerconish Program” on SiriusXM Radio to discuss why the coronavirus pandemic is disproportionately impacting minority communities as well as what steps the Center is taking in an effort to help.
- WHYY featured comments from Robert McNamara, MD, FAAEM, Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Chief Medical Officer of Temple Faculty Physicians, in an article about how area hospitals are managing during the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. McNamara described how Temple prepared for COVID-19 by opening a separate hospital in the Boyer Pavilion building following advice from colleagues in China.
- Jamie Garfield, MD, Associate Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Assistant Chief Quality Officer for Temple Faculty Physicians, and Director of Quality and Improvement and Patient Safety for the Internal Medicine Residency at Temple University Hospital, offered insight to Science Magazine for their piece on how the coronavirus attacks different organs and systems throughout the body. Dr. Garfield described the probable impact of a “cytokine storm,” which is a disastrous overreaction of the body’s immune system in its fight against the virus.

- Thomas Fekete, MD, MACP, the Thomas Durant Chair of the Department of Medicine, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, spoke to NBC10 about coronavirus antibody testing.
- Juan Diaz Quinones, MD, FACOG, MBA, Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at Temple University Hospital, joined NBC10 to discuss childbirth during the pandemic.
- The Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia (CVI) featured Pravin V. Patil, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Training Program at Temple University Hospital, in a segment of its CVI Heartbites production. Dr. Patil’s segment focuses on COVID-19 myocarditis. Anne-Sophie Lacharite-Roberge, MD, a Temple cardiology fellow, will be featured in an upcoming Heartbites segment on COVID-19 and pregnancy.
- The Temple University Police Department saluted Temple University Hospital staff during the evening shift change on Wednesday, April 22. 6ABC and the Temple News captured the celebration. 96.5 TDY-FM, B101 WBEB-FM, and 98.1 WOGL-FM also shared the video.
- American Heritage Credit Union donated personal protective face masks to Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple University Hospital-Jeanes Campus. 6ABC and the Northeast Times featured the donations.
- Samantha Schwartz, the daughter of Temple University Hospital-Jeanes Campus anesthesiologist Howard Schwartz, DO, purchased food for the OR and anesthesiology teams there. 6ABC was there for her donation and delivery.
- CBS3 featured Temple University Hospital (TUH) transplant patient Madu Rago in a segment about organ transplantation during the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Rago had a kidney and liver transplant at TUH.
- Cassandra Cuesta, MHA, CPXP, Director of Patient Experience at Temple University Hospital (TUH), and her mother Linda Cuesta, who owns the Happy Heart Preschool and Kindergarten in Douglassville, collaborated on a service project in which the school’s parents and children created artwork for the staff working at TUH during the coronavirus pandemic. The Pottstown Mercury and the Berks-Mont News highlighted their efforts.
