Diagnosis

To diagnose mitral valve prolapse, your doctor will review your medical history and perform a physical exam. Your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen for a heart murmur, snapping or clicking, or lung congestion — sounds associated with prolapse. If these are present, your doctor may order additional tests to determine if you have mitral valve regurgitation.
