In heart failure, the heart can't pump enough blood to the rest of the body. The heart still beats, but it is weak and damaged. Fluid often backs up (congestion) into the lungs, liver, abdomen or legs.

What Causes Heart Failure?

The cause of heart failure is usually injury or strain on the heart muscle due to:

• Coronary artery disease
• Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
• High blood pressure
• Heart valve problems
• Abnormal heart rhythms (either too fast or too slow)
• Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
• Inflammation
• Other conditions
