The Pathologist highlighted a presentation on optimizing diagnostic stewardship from Kaede Ota Sullivan, MD, MBA, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, at the Association for Molecular Pathology 2025 annual meeting in Boston. Sullivan stressed that a structured diagnostic stewardship program can improve patient outcomes and reduce unnecessary treatment. A structured diagnostic stewardship program includes effective test utilization and optimization of specimen collection, test performance, and reporting. It is also a multidisciplinary enterprise, with collaboration among laboratory professionals, infectious disease specialists, medical staff, nursing, and information technology teams.
