Philly Voice highlighted a new amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research collaboration between Temple Health and Temple University involving the use of so-called "digital twins," which has the potential to revolutionize treatment for people with the neurological disorder. Terry Heiman-Patterson, MD, Director of Temple Health’s MDA/ALS Center of Hope, and Huanmei Wu, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Services Administration and Policy at Temple University’s Barnett College of Public Health, are working together on the Digital Twin for Personalized Medicine project, which is combining clinical data with advanced analytics and artificial intelligence in an effort to create individualized, virtual models, known as digital twins, of people living with ALS. One of the most frustrating parts of ALS for both patients and physicians is how difficult it is to predict the progression of the disease. The hope is that the project could ultimately help predict critical milestones for patients with ALS, allowing families and healthcare providers to plan ahead, monitor health closely, and avoid delays in care.
