Temple University Health System’s preparations for and treatment of patients amidst the coronavirus pandemic continue to be part of the media’s COVID-19 coverage.
- Gerard J. Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Temple Lung Center, was a guest on the “Your Radio Doctor” program on 1210 WPHT. Dr. Criner discussed the coronavirus pandemic, including Temple University Hospital’s participation in a variety of clinical trials; TUH’s collaboration with colleagues in Wuhan, China; and the decision to transform the Boyer Pavilion building into a separate COVID-19 hospital. He also emphasized the growth of the Temple Lung Center over the years, its commitment to conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and its multidisciplinary lung transplant program. “Your Radio Doctor” also highlighted Patricia Gannon, RN, a radiology-special procedures nurse, and her daughter Siobhan Knox, RN, a medical-surgical nurse, for its Mother’s Day episode. The two have been working alongside one another at TUH during the coronavirus pandemic.
- Tony S. Reed, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of Temple University Hospital, discussed “medical distancing” in an interview with the Philadelphia Business Journal. “Medical distancing” refers to patients avoiding or delaying medical help during the coronavirus pandemic when they previously would have sought out care. Dr. Reed also discussed Temple’s decision to begin resuming some elective procedures and office visits.

- FOX29 featured Shirley Gardiner, RN, a critical care float nurse at Temple University Hospital, in its “The Heroes” segment, where she recounted caring for patients with COVID-19. She was recognized as an honorary grand marshal at the NASCAR race in Darlington, where her name was painted on the car of driver William Byron. The Philadelphia Tribune also profiled her in a story.
- Monica Busuioc, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and William C. Pace, MD, in infectious diseases, reflected on what it’s been like on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic the last few months in a Philadelphia Inquirer feature.

- Daniel A.
