The Philadelphia Inquirer published an article on Temple Health’s strategy of aggressively settling old medical malpractice cases to reduce financial risk and long-term medical malpractice expenses. As part of the strategy, Temple Health also changed the types of outside lawyers it hires to defend it in malpractice cases, swapping medical malpractice specialists for seasoned commercial litigators. John Ryan, Temple Health Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, and General Counsel, told the Inquirer that the strategy has already led to better case settlements and a dramatic reduction in the number of outstanding cases at any one time. He explained that the money Temple Health is saving on malpractice costs is being invested in better and safer care. “That’s not a byproduct of all we’re trying to do as the lawyers. It’s the goal,” said Ryan.
