The GOLD International Conference – the largest dedicated to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the world – celebrated its 10th year on Nov. 12-13 in Philadelphia. Hosted in partnership by the Temple Lung Center and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), this year’s conference included an evening session on Nov. 12th moderated by Gerard J. Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Director of the Temple Lung Center and Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. The session was dedicated to the discussion of surgery in patients with COPD and included:
• Joseph Friedberg, MD, FACS, Thoracic Surgeon-in-Chief at Temple Health, on lung-sparing surgical options in patients with COPD with lung cancer. In the first of two videos with HCPLive, Friedberg spoke about the prevalence of COPD in patients with lung cancer, how they present, and their pathway to care and surgery. In the second video, he discussed the importance of pre- and post-operative care for these patients.
• Charles T. Bakhos, MD, MBA, FACS, Vice Chief of the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, on lung volume reduction surgery in patients who fail bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR). In a video interview with HCPLive, Bakhos spoke about the characteristics of these patients and considerations for surgery. He also highlighted Temple’s multidisciplinary approach to care.
• Yoshiya Toyoda, MD, PhD, Surgical Director of Thoracic Transplantation at Temple University Hospital, on lung transplantation in patients with COPD.
