Brendan Hart, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and Lauren T. Murphy, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, offered insight to WHYY on a steady uptick in seizures seen among people who use drugs. Emergency department visits related to drug use that have included a complaint or diagnosis of seizure have more than doubled over the past five years, according to a Philadelphia Department of Public Health advisory. Rapidly changing street drug supply, brain injuries that can occur with overdoses, untreated health infections, and exposure to harsh environmental conditions could all potentially play a role.
