Wissam Chatila, MD, PhD, Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, provided perspective to Medscape on data presented at the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) Annual Meeting in Chicago which showed that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is prevalent among veterans, but the role of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) remains unclear and likely underdiagnosed. AATD is a genetic condition that raises the risk for lung disease and liver disease.
