Shameek Gayen, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, provided perspective for a Medscape article about pulmonary embolism (PE) in pregnant women. Pregnant women and women in the postpartum period carry a four- to fivefold higher risk for thromboembolism than nonpregnant women, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Diagnosing thromboembolism, including PE, is challenging in this patient population because symptoms often mirror normal changes in pregnancy. Gayen shared his clinical and diagnostic approach to these cases with Medscape.
