Sara Goldrick-Rab, PhD, Professor of Sociology and Medicine at Temple University and Founding Director of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, offered insight to the Washington Post and Marketplace following the federal government’s announcement that it will provide an additional $198 million for community colleges and other institutions from the American Rescue Plan, along with additional guidance for how schools can spend it, with a particular emphasis on addressing students’ basic needs. Dr. Goldrick-Rab was at the announcement made by first lady Dr. Jill Biden and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona at Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J. Additionally, the Washington Post also highlighted the Hope Center’s 2020 survey of basic needs insecurity and student well-being during the pandemic.
