Joseph D’Orazio, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, spoke with WBUR about xylazine, an animal tranquilizer that is not approved for humans but has shown up in fentanyl and cocaine. Xylazine is a sedative that slows breathing, blood pressure and heart rate. Dr. D’Orazio discussed the challenges of treating xylazine withdrawal and treating wounds from xylazine use.
