Jessica G. Kovach, MD, Chair and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program at Temple University Hospital, offered insight to the New York Times for an article about how to respond to a stranger in mental distress, following the news that Jordan Neely, who had a history of mental illness and was experiencing homelessness, was killed in a New York City subway car by another passenger who held him in a chokehold.
