Jamie Garfield, MD, Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, provided perspective to Medscape on new data presented at ERS on dupilumab and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The data, from a pooled analysis of two phase 3 studies, showed that treatment with dupilumab significantly improved lung function and quality of life and reduced symptom burden and exacerbations in adults with COPD regardless of current or former smoking habit. Garfield, who was not involved in the study, emphasized that “dupilumab should complement – not replace – aggressive tobacco treatment, since smoking cessation remains the most important disease-modifying intervention in COPD.”
