Cherie P. Erkmen, MD, Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, provided perspective to Medscape on new research published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons that found patients who continue to smoke ahead of lung cancer surgery face a greater risk for pulmonary complications than those who have quit the habit, but their short-term mortality risk is no higher.
