Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a screening procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to find and view any abnormalities in the colon. Small pieces of the abnormalities can be removed during colonoscopies for biopsy and further diagnosis. Your provider may recommend a colonoscopy for:

A colonoscopy usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You will be given medication to help you relax during the procedure. Your doctor will insert a colonoscope, which is a long flexible wire, into the rectum to view the large intestine.

You will need to do prep work before the colonoscopy. Your doctor will give you specific instructions, which may include limiting your diet and fluid intake. You will also need to take laxatives to clean the intestine and will receive two enemas before your procedure.

You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure. Be sure to follow all discharge instructions and let your doctor know right away if you have:

  • Excessive rectal bleeding

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Fever

  • Chills
