Fainting (Syncope)

Syncope (fainting) is a temporary loss of consciousness. This often occurs when your blood pressure drops suddenly, causing a decrease in blood flow to your brain. Fainting is more common in older people, however, it can happen at any age. Additional causes of fainting include:

  • Heat or dehydration
  • Emotional distress
  • Standing up too quickly
  • Medicines
  • Drop in blood sugar
  • Underlying heart conditions

IMPORTANT: If someone faints, make sure their airway is clear, listen for breathing, and make sure they remain lying down for 10-15 minutes. If the person doesn't quickly improve, call 911.

Although fainting is usually not an emergency situation, it can be a sign of a serious problem. If you experience syncope, contact your healthcare provider to discuss the event.
