The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Temple Women & Families Hospital is now providing parents of critically ill newborns with access to a secure, 24-hour remotely accessible video feed of their babies, thanks to a philanthropic contribution from The Superhero Project, Inc.
The hospital’s Level III NICU has been equipped with the AngelEye Camera System — offering parents and families peace of mind with HIPAA-compliant, one-way messaging for hospital staff to send text messages, photos, videos and other memorable moments through their smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices.
“Having a baby in the NICU can be one of the most stressful and emotional experiences a family faces,” said Sharon Kurfuerst, EdD, OTR/L, FACHE, Executive Director of Temple Women & Families Hospital. “The AngelEye Camera System allows parents and loved ones to remain connected to their newborn when they cannot be at the bedside, providing them comfort, reassurance, and peace of mind during a difficult time. We are deeply grateful to The Superhero Project for their generosity and commitment to supporting our patients and families in such a meaningful way.”
The Superhero Project, Inc., a locally based 501c3 charitable foundation, has committed $50,000 annually over a four-year period to support Temple Women & Families Hospital’s NICU. This substantial financial commitment will provide for the purchase and installation of the AngelEye Camera System, which is mounted on cribs and tables where newborns are resting or receiving care. Philadelphia Building Trades Council helped fundraise to support this contribution.
“We are so happy to be working with Temple Health and Temple Women & Families Hospital to bring AngelEye Cameras to their NICU,” said Katie Roberts, a board member with The Superhero Project, Inc. “I’ve met some of my best friends from being a NICU mom. Our mission is to make sure NICU moms know they’re not alone. Each one has their own journey. And the need to know every minute with your child is deserved.”
Improving access and communication
Roberts’ son, Dylan, required immediate resuscitation and intubation when he was born in 2018. He spent the next 27 days in NICU. AngelEye Cameras weren’t available at the hospital where Dylan was born. Roberts recalls getting physically ill in car-rides home from the hospital where Dylan remained and having to call clinical staff for regular updates.
With AngelEye Cameras, Roberts would have had 24/7 access to a secure video feed of Dylan in the NICU, as well as personalized notes and updates from clinicians regarding the care he was receiving.
“Everyone wants to see and hold their baby and snuggle them, especially in those early days,” Roberts said. “AngelEye gives a NICU mom the next-best thing, and we know that the addition of this technology to Temple Women & Families Hospital will bring relief and comfort for parents and families.”
