In addition to their $25,000 donation, the Truist Championship gifted special tournament-themed onesies to all babies born at Temple Health during tournament week. In honor of Mother’s Day, pro golfer Tony Finau and his wife Alayna provided 20 patients with flowers and gift baskets, which included baby wipes, diapers, swaddle baskets, Truist YETI cups, and Truist Championship onesies.

“Temple Health’s commitment to providing accessible, compassionate care for mothers and babies in Philadelphia aligns perfectly with the core values of the Truist Championship,” says Joie Chitwood, the Championship’s Executive Director. “When we considered impactful ways to support the community, Temple Women & Families Hospital stood out for its dedication to serving those who need it most. We’re proud to contribute to their mission and help further their exceptional work.”

“We’re extremely grateful to the Truist Championship for this generous donation,” says Abhi Rastogi, MBA, MIS, Executive Vice President of Temple Health and President & CEO of Temple University Hospital. “Temple Women & Families will be the only hospital dedicated to mothers and babies in the Philadelphia region, and these funds will make excellent care easier to access for the women and families of Philadelphia, regardless of their economic status.”

Celebrating New Moms and Families

In addition to their $25,000 donation, the Truist Championship gifted special tournament-themed onesies to all babies born at Temple Health during tournament week. In honor of Mother’s Day, pro golfer Tony Finau and his wife Alayna surprised 20 patients with flowers and gift baskets, which included baby wipes, diapers, swaddle baskets, Truist YETI cups, and Truist Championship onesies.

“Everyone was so excited to meet Tony and Alayna,” says Sharon Kurfuerst, EdD, OTR/L, FACHE, Executive Director of Temple Women & Families. “As a mother of six, Alayna is incredibly inspiring, and we were thrilled to have her and Tony visit us to celebrate some of our new moms for Mother’s Day.”

Innovative Technologies and Programs to Improve Outcomes

Uplifting moms also means working hard to give their babies the best start in life, which is our mission at Temple Women & Families. The Truist Championship’s donation will help make this happen, as will the programs and new technologies we’re leveraging to improve outcomes.

That includes the Temple Mama Model, which will pair our most vulnerable pregnant patients with a perinatal Community Health Worker from their first OB appointment until one year postpartum. That Community Health Worker will provide healthcare navigation, proactively address any missed appointments, and offer connections to social determinants of health programming, all while cultivating trust and empowerment.

We’ve also developed a maternal health outcomes dashboard to study our maternal health rates, trends, and key factors driving inequities across different groups. This data-driven resource will guide medical record-based, risk-reducing interventions. In turn, we’ll use risk-based algorithms to identify potential risk factors during labor to address and prevent negative outcomes for mom and baby. These Epic-based algorithms will send out real-time alerts to our care teams so they can make timely and informed decisions.

New Services Put Moms and Babies First

On May 12th, Temple Women & Families opened two operating rooms focused on same-day surgeries, as well as a Lab and Pharmacy. These add to the broad array of outpatient services already offered at the hospital, including gynecology, obstetrics, family medicine, pediatrics, X-ray and CT/MRI, with further opportunities for expansion based on community need. Inpatient services, including maternity, labor & delivery, and neonatal ICU, will begin operating in the coming months.

At Temple Women & Families, mothers and babies are our top priority: not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. Thanks to our latest innovations and partners like the Truist Championship, we’re making that happen—and their commitment will improve outcomes for families across Philadelphia.
