Nick J. Barcellona, MBA, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Temple University Health System

Nick J. Barcellona, MBA, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Temple University Health System (TUHS), has been named by the Philadelphia Business Journal as a 2021 CFO of the Year Rising Star Honoree. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the award is given to financial professionals in greater Philadelphia for their outstanding performance as corporate financial stewards, strategic thinking which strengthens a company's market position, success in overcoming business challenges, contribution to the company's reputation, and community involvement.

“This is an outstanding achievement which honors Nick’s tireless work contributing to Temple’s positive financial performance and market position,” said Michael A. Young, MHA, FACHE, President and CEO of Temple University Health System and Temple University Hospital. “Nick Barcellona is one of the new leaders on the TUHS team who plays a leading role in the TUHS success story.”

Barcellona came to TUHS in September 2020 after a successful career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where (among other accomplishments) he presided over the development of an activity-based costing system at UPMC Mercy, and the creation of a clinically integrated pediatric health network that enhanced value and drove growth.

He brought that skill with him to Philadelphia as a central member of the TUHS leadership team producing historic operating margins for the organization and nearly doubling its days cash on hand—a key metric of a hospital’s financial health. Bond rating agencies took notice, making positive adjustments to TUHS’s outlook. TUHS is using its strengthened financial position to make key investments in the patient experience, growth opportunities and needed capital improvements.
