Scott R. Shepard, MD

Scott R. Shepard, MD, has been named the Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at Temple University Hospital, and an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM). 

Board-certified in Neurosurgery, Dr. Shepard earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, NY. He completed a General Surgery Internship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, a Neurosurgery Residency at the University of California at San Francisco, and a Surgical Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. Dr. Shepard was also a research fellow at CNS Injury and Edema Center and Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California at San Francisco.

Dr. Shepard specializes in neurosurgical oncology, neuro-oncology, stereotactic radiosurgery of the brain and spine, gamma knife radiosurgery, and neurosurgical critical care. His research interests include mechanisms of glioma invasion and radiation-induced brain injury. 

“We are excited to have Dr. Shepard join the Department of Neurosurgery,” says Michael Weaver, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at LKSOM.  “He has trained with some of the best neurosurgeons in the country and I am confident his experience and leadership will be an invaluable asset to the team. Dr. Shepard will be working closely with Fox Chase Cancer Center to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary Neuro-Oncology program.”

Prior to joining Temple, Dr. Shepard was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and an attending physician at Memorial Herman Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Temple family,” says Dr. Shepard. “Temple’s Neurosurgery Program has a distinguished reputation in numerous aspects of neurosurgery and I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to offer the best possible care for the patients we serve.”  

Dr. Shepard is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons/ American Association of Neurological Surgeons- Joint Section on Tumors, Society of Neuro Oncology, and Congress of Neurological Surgeons/ American Association of Neurological Surgeons- Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care.
