Radiology Procedures

Radiology is a medical specialty that uses imaging procedures to diagnose conditions and injuries. Some radiology procedures are also used to treat diseases. Radiologists (doctors with special training in interpreting medical images) oversee these procedures.

Advancements in imaging technologies make it possible for radiologists to use medical imaging to diagnose nearly every type of disease and injury.

Temple radiologists are skilled in all types of radiology procedures. The most common are:

Bone density scans

These scans are a special type of X-ray imaging used to diagnose osteoporosis and measure bone loss.

Computed tomography (CT) Scan

Computed tomography (CT) uses a computer to turn X-ray images into detailed cross-sectional or 3D pictures.

Fluoroscopy

This procedure uses X-rays to create moving images of the inside of the body. Some fluoroscopy procedures involve drinking or injecting a contrast material to create clearer images.

Mammogram

This low-dose X-ray diagnoses breast cancer and other breast conditions.

Molecular imaging

The procedure uses nuclear medicine to create 2D or 3D images of molecular and cellular processes in the body. Nuclear medicine involves swallowing, injecting or inhaling a small amount of radioactive material. The radioactive material is detected by a special camera that takes pictures and displays them on a computer screen.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to create detailed pictures of the inside of the body.

Positron emission tomography

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a type of nuclear medicine exam that creates images at the cellular level. Like molecular imaging, PET involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material that is detected by a special camera.

PET/CT Scan

PET/CT scanners offer very detailed images, short scan times and less radiation than other machines. This advanced imaging machine performs both PET scans and CT scans to catch certain diseases early and create the best treatment plan for you. Both of Temple’s PET/CT scanners are operated by specially trained imaging technologists.

Ultrasound

This imaging procedure uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body.

X-ray imaging

X-rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that creates images of the inside of the body.
