POEM Procedure for Treatment of Achalasia

Peroral endoscopic myotomy, or POEM, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to release constricted esophageal muscles. This procedure is most commonly used to treat achalasia, a disorder that makes it hard for food and liquid to pass into the stomach.

With POEM, a Temple GI specialist inserts an endoscope through the mouth and into the esophagus. Then, they make a small incision in the constricted esophageal muscles which will release and help with eating and drinking.

Benefits of POEM Procedure

Patients who undergo a POEM procedure may experience many benefits compared to open surgery, including:

  • Less pain after surgery
  • Quicker recovery after surgery
  • Ability to avoid abdominal surgery and external scarring
  • Faster return to work and normal activities
