Carotid Reconstruction

If one of the carotid arteries is severely damaged or blocked—for example, due to an aneurysm or to extensive build-up of plaque—the damaged section may need to be replaced. A prosthetic blood vessel, called a bypass, is used to replace the damaged part of the artery and restore full blood flow to the face and brain. A vein taken from another part of the patient’s body may also be used instead of a prosthetic material or prosthesis.
