Yeast Infection

What Is a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection develops when the fungus Candida overgrows, leading to a collection of symptoms that may cause discomfort of the vulva — the external area around the vagina.

Most women will have a yeast infection at some point during their lifetime. Because yeast infections have symptoms that are also present with other, more serious conditions, many women choose to see a doctor for diagnosis rather than treating the infection on their own.

All women can contract a yeast infection, but some are at a higher risk due to these conditions:

  • A compromised immune system, either because of medications or other health issues
  • Increased estrogen, usually due to hormone therapy or contraception
  • Pregnancy
  • Recent intercourse or oral sex
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Use of antibiotics

Symptoms

Not all women who have a yeast infection will display symptoms. However, symptoms can be irritating and intense. Common symptoms include:

  • Burning — Burning pain can accompany urination and intercourse.
  • Discharge — The discharge can be clear and watery or thick and white, similar to cottage cheese. Yeast infection discharge is typically odor-free.
  • Itching and irritation — The vagina and vulva (the external areas surrounding the vagina) can become red and swollen, and irritation from the infection can cause itching.

Treatment Options

Yeast infections can be treated either with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Treatments may include:

  • Over-the-counter antifungal medications — These medications, either in the form of cream or a suppository — can be used for several days to relieve symptoms and treat the fungus.
  • Prescription antifungal medications — This oral medication, prescribed by a physician, is taken orally, either as a single dose or as two pills taken 48 hours apart.
