Varicose Veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency Diagnosis

Your physician will perform a physical exam and review your medical history to determine the severity of your varicose veins and if chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is present.

Sometimes, your doctor will use ultrasound—a non-invasive test that uses sound waves—to create a picture of blood flow through the veins and to determine if there are any blood clots. This may also be called Doppler or ultrasound duplex imaging.
