Scabies

What Is Scabies?

Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by a human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). The scabies mite burrows into the skin where it lives and lays its eggs. If not treated, these mites cause severe itching and a red, pimple-like rash.

Scabies is usually passed from one person to another by direct skin contact and sometimes through infested clothing or linens. However, once detected, it can be easily treated with medication.

Symptoms

It’s possible to be infested with scabies and have no visible signs for 4 to 6 weeks. The most common symptoms are:

  • Blisters or bumps — Pink, raised bumps with a clear top filled with fluid are likely to appear on areas of the body where scabies have infested.
  • Itching — A sensation of a foreign object crawling on the skin will create constant and sometimes severe itching, especially at night.
  • Rash — Pimples will develop on certain areas of the body where scabies have infested.
  • Sores — Almost-constant itching can lead to scratching that may irritate the skin and produce open sores.

The blisters or bumps usually occur in folds of the skin but can be present on any part of the body. Scabies are most often found:

  • Around the breasts
  • Around the male genitals
  • Around the waist
  • Between the fingers
  • In the armpits
  • On the buttocks

Treatment Options

Scabies mites will not go away without treatment, and these treatments are often recommended:

  • Antihistamine pills — Antihistamines may provide relief if the itching continues. If symptoms reoccur following the treatment, a second treatment is necessary.
  • Cream or lotion — A doctor will prescribe a scabicide cream or lotion that is applied to the entire body from the neck down and left on for 8 to 10 hours before being washed off. The cream kills scabies and mite eggs.

It’s recommended that anyone who has had close physical contact with an infected individual also be treated.

Scabies mites can live for 2 or 3 days on the surface of clothing, bedding and other linens. Use hot water to wash all items with which the infected individual has had contact. Dry them in a hot dryer. For items that can’t be washed, take them to a dry cleaner or seal them in a plastic bag for 7 days.
