Renal Artery Stenosis

Renal artery stenosis occurs when the renal arteries narrow. Over time this can lead to high blood pressure or even kidney failure. Two causes of renal artery stenosis are atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and fibromuscular dysplasia (abnormal growth or build-up on the walls of the blood vessels).

Risk Factors

Like most vascular diseases, risk factors for renal artery stenosis include:

  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • Diet high in cholesterol and sodium
  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • High blood pressure
  • Lack of exercise
  • Age
  • Gender (females more likely)
