Symptoms

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy often causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, chest pain, cough while lying down and abnormal heart rhythm. These symptoms can progressively get worse. In some people, these symptoms progress faster than in others. If untreated, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can lead to other heart complications such as: blood clots, valve problems and cardiac arrest. Patients who do not have symptoms are not at an increased risk for sudden death and may not need treatment. These patients often do not have any serious problems and remain stable throughout their life.

IMPORTANT: Call 911 for emergency medical treatment if you have severe breathing, fainting, or chest pain not relieved by rest or medications and lasting longer than 5 minutes.
