Diabetic Foot Infections

Foot infections are one of the most common complications of diabetes. There are two basic ways in which they occur. First, diabetes reduces sensation in the feet, meaning injuries or pressure sores may go unnoticed. Second, poor circulation in the legs and feet can slow down or halt the healing process, meaning even small infections can become persistent and serious.

Known risk factors for diabetic foot infections include:

  • Longer length of time since the initial wound
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Hospitalization

Patients who are hospitalized or have had their wounds for longer periods of time are more likely to develop serious infections involving more than one type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Overall, any type of diabetic foot infection is associated with higher rates of illness and limb amputation.

The Temple Limb Salvage Center specializes in treating patients who are at risk for an amputation. Using preventive medicine, medications, novel therapies and limb-sparing surgical techniques, they aim to preserve their patients' health while providing viable alternatives to amputation.
