Located in Philadelphia, Temple University Hospital (TUH) is the tertiary hub of Temple University Health System (TUHS), which is composed of 3 hospitals, multidisciplinary satellite sites, urgent care centers and community outpatient offices.  TUH is a 732-bed institution and is the chief clinical training site for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.
TUH performed the first heart transplant in the Philadelphia region in 1984. In 2017, it became the country’s volume leader in lung transplantation, with 131 lung transplant surgeries. In addition, TUH has a robust abdominal organ transplant program (kidney, liver, and pancreas) and heart transplant program, with 2017 averages of 90 and 25 surgeries, respectively.

TUH’s first pharmacy residency program was founded in 1969, and its graduates have gone on to successful careers in ambulatory care, critical care, infectious diseases, solid organ transplant, and academia, among others. There are currently 5 PGY1 pharmacy residents who gain clinical experience at both the TUH and Jeanes Hospital campuses. The PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant pharmacy resident will have opportunities to gain clinical experience at both these campuses as well. This program will further enhance their clinical skills and knowledge through participation on the multidisciplinary transplant team. PGY2 pharmacy resident involvement will range from providing clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient settings, developing protocols and policies, educating pharmacy students and residents, and performing outcomes research.

Mission of the Department of Pharmacy Services

Our mission is to provide safe, comprehensive, high quality, patient specific, pharmaceutical care in an environment of professionalism, respect, and integrity.

Residency Program Statement of Purpose

The PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy Residency Program at Temple University Hospital (TUH) seeks to prepare pharmacists for a career in solid organ transplant clinical pharmacy practice by building a strong foundation of clinical skills and knowledge. Pharmacists completing this residency program will gain experience and confidence in providing proficient, evidence-based, and compassionate care to solid organ transplant recipients. Residents in this program will become integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams that seek to optimize patient care and outcomes, be eligible for board certification, and obtain an independent solid organ transplant clinical practice position in the inpatient and ambulatory settings upon graduation.

Why Temple

The PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy Resident will have the opportunity to work in an academic tertiary care hospital providing them with exposure to all types of solid organ transplant populations. The complexity and diversity of the patient population will challenge the resident and expand their clinical and critical thinking skills in providing comprehensive care to solid organ transplant recipients. The strong relationship between transplant pharmacy and transplant surgery/medicine is integral in providing an educational and diverse experience to the resident while also providing the opportunity to establish collegial relationships with providers and other transplant staff. Transplant pharmacists at TUH are heavily involved in providing direct patient care to solid organ transplant recipients in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings, participating in outcomes research, protocol, policy, and guideline development, and educating pharmacy and transplant staff, students, and residents.

There is 1 PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy Residency position available each year.
