Motility Disorders Program

Digestion requires coordinated muscle movements to move food along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, from the mouth all the way through the bowels. Digestive motility disorders involve abnormal contractions that make it difficult for food and liquid to move through your digestive tract. When your body has trouble with digestion, it can cause a range of symptoms, such as heartburn, nausea, constipation or unpredictable bowel movements, that impact your day-to-day life.

Temple gastroenterologists are leaders in diagnosing and treating both the causes and symptoms of conditions such as achalasia, chronic GERD, irritable bowel syndrome, fecal incontinence and gastroparesis. Many of these conditions are complex issues that other centers find difficult to manage, but at Temple our physicians are experienced with helping these patients get back to life with less pain and discomfort.

Clinical Research Means Leading-Edge Care

The Temple Digestive Disease Center is one of only 6 sites in the country designated by the NIH to study gastroparesis (problems with how food moves through the stomach) and is one of the nation’s leading centers for implantation of gastric stimulators to correct this condition. As a Temple patient, you have access to leading-edge therapies through active clinical trials and research.
