Laura Goetzl, MD, MPH, Joins Temple's Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Laura Goetzl, MD, MPH, has been appointed Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Temple University School of Medicine and an attending physician who will practice high-risk obstetrics and prenatal diagnosis at Temple University Hospital. She will also serve on Temple's Institutional Review Board. Dr. Goetzl comes to Temple from the Medical University of South Carolina where she was an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Director of Labor and Delivery, and Director of OB Quality.

Clinically, Dr. Goetzl specializes in prenatal diagnosis, chorionic villus sampling, ultrasound and management of high-risk pregnancies. Dr. Goetzl is the lead Principal Investigator on a $2.8 million National Institutes of Health grant to study placental transport of psychoactive medications in early pregnancy. She is also studying the in utero effects that combinations of inflammation, hyperthermia and hypoxia have on the fetal brain.

"Dr. Goetzl's impressive training, clinical skills and cutting-edge research activities will help strengthen patient care in our department and advance the body of knowledge in our field," says Enrique Hernandez, MD, the Abraham Roth Professor, and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services at Temple University School of Medicine.

Dr. Goetzl earned her medical degree from the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine and her Master's in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her OB/GYN residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

An active researcher, Dr. Goetzl has numerous publications and presentations to her credit. She is active in a variety of professional societies and serves on several committees within these organizations, including the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation. Dr. Goetzl was an associate editor of the 5th edition of Gabbe: Normal and Problem Pregnancies.
